Hello again and welcome back for the second part of our eco-swaps blog post! Picking up from where we left off we’re now onto looking at our wardrobes, consuming more responsibly and living a little lighter - which we're pleased to be talking about for the start of Second Hand September - so here's lots of ideas to help you get involved!
1. Children’s wear
Children go through masses of clothing, and with the fast fashion industry under increasing pressure to improve, there’s been a wave of sustainably focussed baby brands, clothing rental and swapping businesses revolutionising this sector!
What better way to start than from the bottom up! 3 million nappies are thrown away each year in the UK, and take hundreds of years to decompose, so swapping to cloth nappies will have a hugely positive impact on your carbon footprint, even if they’re used only part-time.
Just some of the amazing cloth nappy brands include: Tots Bots, Close Parent, Bum Genius, Little Lamb nappies and Bambino Mio – there are different layer, fabric and fastening options with variations for newborns up to potty-training toddlers, and you should only need approximately 30 reusable nappies until your baby is nappy-free!
Please see our Instagram post for more information and really interesting discussion around this.
Now onto baby clothing! Did you know a baby will wear approximately 10 sizes in their first year alone?! Renting clothing bundles is your answer here. And you'd be pleased to know there are various rental and swapping options out there, which will work out as a more economical and much less wasteful option than buying. Not only will it solve the problem of the ridiculously fast turnover of baby clothes you’ll go through as they grow up, but also the rehoming of the no longer needed or outgrown clothes (similar to buggies)!
Check out Bundlee and Little Loop for renting baby clothing from birth up to 3 years from your favourite brands, and Kids o’clock as a children’s clothing online marketplace to sell, rent or buy super stylish children’s wear and accessories. For pre-loved collections, Pure Bundle are vital for beautifully curated pre-loved collections which you can buy and use for as long as you need and they will either buy it back from you, donate the proceeds to one of their charity partners, or you can swap for another adorable wardrobe.
And finally, Pure Earth Collection, whilst not a renting or swapping platform, they stock gorgeous biodegradable baby products, toys and clothing that are of a high quality and are made to last.
2. Maternity wear
Now, not to forget all you mamas out there! Maternity wear is essential for only a short time in the grand scheme of things, and there are some amazing brands to make you look great whilst also being kind to the planet.
Natal Active has stylish activewear that are designed for the long-term and are perfect pre and post partum, with super comfy and long-lasting leggings you’ll never want to take off!
Circos is a brilliant Dutch brand that delivers to the UK and has subscriptions available for children’s clothing and maternity wear that is sustainable at heart. And Bundle ‘n Joy is a maternity brand based in the UK that also works as a monthly subscription for smaller bundles at a time.
3. Baby Equipment and Toys
This is a huge category in itself, which has been overhauled by incredible options to help you live a more sustainable family life – and this is where we come in!
Buggi is our buggy subscription service offering a wide range of the leading brands and models helping to lower the demand for new each time through our reconditioning service. This helps prolong the lifespan of our buggies by making them as good as new before they go onto their next loving home, and ultimately reduces our carbon footprints. We take the best of buying new and take away the risk and faff out of buying pre-loved through an online marketplace, plus with the added flexibility of being able to swap models as your needs change and your family grows, all for an affordable monthly amount.
Alongside us are The Bike Club who have a similar idea with their bike rentals that allow you to size up and swap as your kiddies grow up – and so current right now too with cycling becoming an ever more popular activity for families to enjoy.
Then there's the fab Whirli, who help promote toy sharing by delivering cute, curated toy boxes to your door via a subscription so you can sample different toys and keep or swap them as you like! As we all know kids just have way too many laying around and not all get used or are liked as much as others.
For all your baby showers and kiddy parties your prayers have been answered with the fabulous Party Kit Network providing reusable party tableware, decorations and everything you need for the perfect celebration. Simply look up your local party kit or start up your own to spread the joy without compromising the planet!
And lastly, Kidd3r uses a credit scheme, allowing you to buy, sell or swap pre-loved hobby and tech equipment that are usually short-lived, wasteful and expensive as children get bored of their hobbies pretty quickly! Young Planet are doing a similar thing with their app helping to stop items going to landfill, including clothing too.
4. Technology & utilities
Finally, there are a few other brands out there who deserve a mention, but didn’t fall neatly into the other categories and aren’t completely specific to families, but couldn’t help but share!
Firstly, Ecosia – it’s Google, but better! With their profits they plant a tree for free – amazing, right?... Simple swap done!
Octopus Energy and Bulb are renewable energy suppliers that will likely save you money too! Whenever your energy contract is due to end, check out one of these and make a difference with the click of a switch!
For those of you who struggle with a lot of the swaps but still want to make a difference, there are plenty of websites you can use to offset your carbon footprints for a small price.
Whether it’s that flight you took when you really needed to get away, the car journeys to see loved ones, or a flurry of packages delivered over lockdown to keep your kiddies occupied, you can calculate your impact and plant trees to become carbon neutral, or even positive. Check out Ecologi, and OffCents specifically for travel.
Last of all, refurbished and pre-owned technology – if you’re not fussed about the very latest gadgets, why not upgrade to a previous model to the latest, and opt for refurbished, but for only a fraction of the price? Apple certifies their own products and offers service and support too. And Amazon and Ebay also have their own sections dedicated to this, as well as newcomers such as Back Market who are doing a great job of rivalling the big guys.
So, there you go, our second part to complete our sustainable parenting blog and directory here for you, whenever you need it! (P.s. this is just a small selection of the amazing brands out there – but it’s a great start!)
We hope you find this useful :)
Through our subscription service, Buggi offers parents an affordable, flexible and sustainable alternative to traditional buggy ownership. It’s about finding what’s right for you and your little ones whilst recognising that people’s needs change. Buggi is here for you: for every step of the way!
